Empowering Special Kids With Theatre

Theatre is one of the most inclusive artforms. It brings together music, dance, acting, body movements, rhythm, mime, sign language and many more things that could help one communicate even better than the routine verbal form of communication. All these artforms are being used by experts as tools to enable children with special needs to express themselves well.
Activities such as singing and dancing allow children with special needs to open up and work in groups. They feel confident about meeting other people. Body movement and sign language helps them to not only express themselves but also understand the expressions of others around them. They also become aware about their body, and are enabled to understand and follow instructions. They learn to manage anxiety. Regular motivation and applause makes them feel accepted and appreciated.
How it started at WAI? + -
On June 13, 2023, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh Anandiben Patel felicitated Dr. Brijeshwar Singh with the prestigious Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Theatre Promotion at Raj Bhawan, Lucknow. In a post ceremony meeting with Dr. Brijeshwar, the Governor advised him to introduce theatre to children with special needs. She even suggested that Windermere could work with the special kids at Disha School in Bareilly. Following her valuable advice, WAI formed a team to work on those lines.
Workshop at Disha School + -
WAI artists organized a month-long workshop at Disha School. Danish Khan and Anushka Mishra from visited the school daily to train the special kids initially in dancing. Gradually, they introduced other activities such as singing, body movements, sign language etc. As the workshop progressed, more and more kids started to show their interest. Their joint efforts concluded on the occasion of the Independence Day i.e. the 15th of August with a wonderful stage performance by the special kids of Disha School.
Future Plans + -
Apart from periodic visits to Disha School, artists from WAI have reached out to other organizations/institutions that are working for the rehabilitation of children with special needs. The organization is working on a special program to introduce theatre to children with special needs.
